How I  Work

I create every drawing by hand using quality art materials and your photograph as a reference picture.

To begin the process, simply email me directly through my contact info below.  In that email, you will need to state which style of art you want (pastel or graphite) and which available paper size you are interested in.

We will begin the process via email, organizing details concerning how you want your portrait look.  Then I will send a 25% down payment invoice to you via PayPal, or you can pay in full by check.

Complete payment is due within 1 week of your drawing being complete!

As I am creating your drawing, I will frequently take pictures and send you updates so you can see your artwork in progress!

A Good Reference Picture

Because I use your photography as a direct reference for the portrait, the photo you send me needs to be large, clear, and well lit.  The better your picture, the better my drawing!  If you have an old photo you would like me to draw from, please contact me and I might be able to work with you.

Pictures should be sent to me via email at abigail.o.myers@gmail.com

Tips For Taking a Great Reference Photo:

  • Get on your pets level.  Try not to take a picture looking straight down on him or from across the room.  The picture needs to be close up, at least head neck and shoulders close!

  • Try to have your pet looking to one side or the other unless you prefer straight on.

  • Have your pet sitting up in a flattering position.  Lying down deforms the posture and makes it difficult to portray in a drawing.

  • Go outside! Natural lighting is ideal for pictures because it will help bring out all the subtle details in their coat to help me see the details to draw them.

  • Check to make sure your picture isn't blurry or grainy.  Zoom in and look at the eyes and nose, if you can't see it, I can't see it and how am I expected to draw it!

Note about Pastel Pencils:

I cannot do humans in pastels.   I can order larger paper sizes if you have a project that you would like done on a bigger scale or with more than 2 or 3 subjects.  I work pastels on a specialized paper called PastelMat.  This paper comes in different base colors that act as a toner for the drawing as I work.  I typically choose which color to use based on what colors will be a part of the drawing but if you have a preference please let me know and I will try to work with you.

Note about each Graphite Pencil paper size:

  • 5 x 7's are great for as a gift for a friend when perhaps you don't have an outstanding reference photo.  They are a smaller paper size and this makes them a little less detailed than my other sizes.  I cannot include extra items or extra subject in a 5 x 7, strictly 1 head and shoulders subjects.

  • 8x10 is ideal for close up portraits when you have a single subject with a very good reference picture.  I can get all those little details in on the fur and even possibly include extra items like a collar or such. It is possible to fit 2 subjects together in this size, however, each subject will be small.

  • 11x14's are perfect for multiple subjects together, like a family portrait.  I can take different pictures of different pets and put them together in the same drawing.  They don't have to be in the same picture together!  I can make it happen.  This paper size is good for up to 3, maybe 4 subjects.

  • 14 x 17 is the highest graphite paper size I have available. If you have a big project with 4 or more subjects I will advise using this papers size and will discuss a price range.

Note on humans, horse tack or extra objects:

  • If your image has a person in it, it is possible I can draw it for you depending on the angle of the person.  I cannot do people faces straight on, only side views or other abstract type angles.  Extra $50 charge to have a person in your drawing.

  • If you would like to include extensive horse tack, toys or extra objects in your picture, I will provide a quote.  The above prices are for the animal only.
